ChristianBibleTopics Re: tongues – a gift from god

I’ve heard Augustine wrote that the gift of tongues had ceased by the time he wrote. But then if it was “only” for the purpose of evangelization as is claimed, then of course Paul would not have to exhort the brethren to interpret in the chapter used today to excuse forbidding the gift of tongues in 1 Cor. 14.

Here’s the exact verse, which of course trumps anything Augustine had to say, even though he said a lot of other things that were actually Biblical:

1 Corinthians 13:8 ¶Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.}

Now let us reason together: have ANY godly prophecies EVER failed? No they haven’t. “The gifts and callings of God are without repentance”, and yet people use that verse to cover special exemption for today’s heirs of the Sanhedrin and Ahab and Jezebel.

In fact, right after what we know as I Corinthians 13 comes I Corinthians 14, the famous chapter used to criticize tongues as a prayer language, which concludes like this:

1 Corinthians 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

To claim that verse 40 says to forbid tongues directly disobeys verse 13.
